Mitten Challenge Activity
To work at the nanoscale, scientists need the right size tools for the job. Many current technologies are very crude at manufacturing things on the nanoscale, kind of like trying to make Lego models while wearing oven mitts.
This activity is designed to illustrate the idea that small things are best built using small tools. Students will be divided into groups and asked to build Lego models while wearing oven mitts on their hands. Then they will discuss the relationship between the size of the objects being manipulated and the size of the tools needed to manipulate them.
