Names: Sodium chloride, Halite or Rock Salt.

This structure is built from octahedral units. The pompom inside represents a sodium ion and the clear octahedron represents six chloride ions in an octahedral arrangement around the sodium.

1. Build an edge-shared octahedral layer.
2. Build another octahedral layer directly on top of the first layer.
3. Fill in all the space between octahedral layers to form a middle octahedral layer.
