Pentacene
IBM researchers Nikolaj Moll, Reto Schlittler, Gerhard Meyer, Fabian Mohn and Leo Gross stand behind an atomic force microscope.

The experiment was performed in high vacuum at -268C to avoid stray gas molecules or atomic vibrations from affecting the measurements. A single carbon monoxide molecule was attached to the end of the probe so that only one atom came into contact with the pentacene.
